Bronx, New York.
Birth of Hip-Hop. Ending of Disco.
If you're from Chicago, the beginning of the two combined - House Music.
Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby & Moulin Rouge), visually compelling Director, partnered with a team of collaborators who were pioneers of the sound: Grandmaster Flash, MC Nas, Stephen Adly Guirgis, and hip-hop historian Nelson George to create the latest Netflix Original, "The Get Down". A music-driven drama that documents the emergence of a new art form - Set in the late 1970s, when New York was at the brink of bankruptcy and disco was dying out, the rise of hip-hop is told through the lives, art, music and dance of a group of young people in the South Bronx.
The Get Down chronicles a group of friend's quest to growing up during a time when music and art is revitalizing itself on a daily basis. Following the lifestyle of a group of teenagers, the Netflix Original musical drama/dramedy allows one to delve into the ideologies, dance moves, music, art, politics, and family issues of the late 70s. If you're like me and absolutely LOVE a good musical/sit-com/dramedy - then I would absolutely suggest watching "The Get Down". The first season is approximately six episodes long - although each episode is an hour in length - the actors playing Mylene Cruz, Shaolin Fantastic, Ezekiel 'aka Zeek aka Books' Figueroa, and the crew will keep you captivated and enthralled!
